About Our Foundation
Our mission is to fund cutting-edge medical research to prevent and treat human diseases. This mission is advanced by supporting innovative biomedical research at a time when there have been breathtaking advances in medical technologies. Our goal is to participate in making progress against incurable deadly diseases.
We favor investigators whose work challenges the field’s comfortable consensus — the researchers who publish uncomfortable findings and defend them with data. We fund for the long term because the work we care about does not conclude in a single grant cycle.

Multi-year funding extension for Dr. Leland Shapiro
The Emily Foundation is pleased to announce a multi-year extension of funding for Dr. Leland Shapiro, whose rigorous and groundbreaking research has challenged outdated and deeply held assumptions.
We present 11 selected research publications from Dr. Shapiro and associates that have been published since 2023, plus two additional manuscripts currently under peer review. The thrust of these reports challenges the medical profession’s deeply held view that an overactive immune system, or so-called “cytokine storm,” is the primary driver of mortality in sepsis and COVID-19.
Dr. Shapiro’s series of evidence-based studies — ranging from comprehensive cytokine meta-analyses to the provocative “Chasing the Ghost: Hyperinflammation Does Not Cause Sepsis” — are igniting a quiet revolution that exposes a striking defect in medical thinking: seductive, oversimplified, and costly. This project has a strong likelihood of replacing the hyperinflammation approach to sepsis with a novel paradigm.

For the Foundation to consider an unsolicited proposal for funding, the individual or organization must submit this Request Grant Application Invite form and, in the comments section, describe the intended research, how it advances the prevention or treatment of a particular disease, and include a CV of the principal investigator.
If the Foundation believes that the application has merit and falls within the scope of its mission, the applicant will be contacted and invited to submit a more formal proposal.
